Frequently Asked Questions

What should you do if you have a broken, chipped, or knocked out tooth?
+
For a broken or chipped tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces in milk or water. For a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and try to reinsert it. If that’s not possible, keep it in milk and see an emergency dentist immediately – preferably within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
When will you need a tooth extraction & will it hurt?
+
Tooth extraction is needed when a tooth is severely damaged, decayed beyond repair, or causing overcrowding. Modern dental techniques use local anesthesia, making the procedure virtually painless during treatment. Some discomfort is normal afterward, but this can be managed with prescribed pain medication and proper aftercare instructions from your dentist.
How long does it take to ease the pain after a root canal procedure?
+
Most patients experience significant pain relief within 24-48 hours after a root canal. Mild discomfort may persist for a few days but should gradually decrease. Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen are typically sufficient. If severe pain continues beyond 3-4 days or worsens, contact your dentist as this may indicate complications.
How often do fillings need to be replaced?
+
Dental fillings typically last 5-15 years depending on the material used and your oral hygiene habits. Amalgam fillings can last 10-15 years, while composite fillings usually last 5-10 years. Signs that a filling needs replacement include sensitivity, visible cracks, or rough edges. Regular dental checkups help identify when fillings need attention before they become emergency situations.
What is an Emergency Dentist?
+
An emergency dentist provides immediate dental care for urgent situations that cannot wait for regular office hours. They treat severe tooth pain, dental trauma, infections, broken teeth, and other urgent dental problems. Emergency dentists are available when you need immediate attention to prevent complications from dental emergencies.
What types of Dental Crowns are available for emergency situations?
+
Emergency dental crowns include temporary crowns for immediate protection and same-day permanent crowns made from materials like porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys. Temporary crowns provide immediate relief and protection while permanent crowns are fabricated. Some emergency dental offices offer CEREC technology for same-day permanent crown placement, eliminating the need for multiple visits.
